Women in Chains explores violence against women through a deliberately multilayered and ambivalent visual language. At first glance, the images resemble a high-end fashion or beauty editorial – striking portraits, refined lighting, meticulous styling, and aesthetic precision. Only upon closer inspection does the true narrative reveal itself.
What appears to be makeup is in fact a visual translation of injury: bruises, wounds, swollen lips.
Jewellery, initially perceived as a symbol of status and power, turns out to be real chains wrapped tightly around necks and bodies, constricting, restricting breath.
Beauty, power, and oppression coexist here in intentional tension.
The series consists of seven portraits featuring different women, each with distinct poses, expressions, and styling.
All share a direct gaze into the camera, holding the viewer’s eyes with unwavering presence.
Despite visible vulnerability, the women embody strength, dignity, and determination. Within the marks of violence lies resistance and the will to reclaim autonomy.
Women in Chains is conceived as a series that demands to be decoded. Navigating the space between aesthetics, discomfort, and confrontation.
